WINTRY ISSUES TUESDAY MORNING NORTH WEST OF NYC AREA
Good morning everyone. Lingering clouds are around if you’re waking up early this morning, but sun should be on the menu as we head into the day. Another system will be heading towards us for tomorrow night, and it could cause some slippery conditions for the Tuesday morning commute north and west of the NYC area. Meanwhile, colder air is on the way, but the issues I’ve been talking about in terms of how long it lasts, may be coming to fruition.
EASTERN SATELLITE
Look for morning clouds today, then some peaks of sun as the wind begins to pick up. Highs are where they’re at now in the mid 40’s, but it won’t feel very “warm” as our winds increase and gust into the mid 30mph range.
Overnight, we’ll have a seasonably cold one; with clearing skies, windy conditions, and lows in the low to mid 20’s. Areas away from NYC, including colder spots in Suffolk County, Long Island, could see some upper teens as lows overnight.
REGIONAL RADAR
Tomorrow, we remain seasonably cold as clouds begin to move back in. Gusty conditions will continue and highs will be a true, NYC winter-like, low to mid 30’s. Overnight tomorrow, moisture begins to move in as cold air is briefly stubborn to move. Expect some light wet snow or a mix of snow, rain, and sleet to begin the event. Any frozen or mixed precip should turn to all rain before sunrise, causing no headaches for commuters in the NYC area.
However, cold air trapped in the valleys and higher elevations north and west of NYC, will prolong the snow/mixed precip, causing a slippery commute early in the morning. So for those who live in SE NY, NW NJ, and NE PA, give yourself some extra time in the morning.
It’s all rain for NYC on Tuesday and changes to all rain for areas away from NYC by mid morning elsewhere; highs in the mid to upper 40’s.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
On Wednesday, cooler air begins to bleed back in, but the cold stuff is hanging back for a day; highs in the low 40’s. On Thursday, we drop back into the low to mid 30’s, then we await to see if very cold air makes its debut for Friday.
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
In the long range, models are backing away from the idea of a vigorous storm with the split jet stream phasing, but there is still energy regardless. As of now, it looks as we’re into the scenario where one piece goes north, one well south.
This means that as of now, colder air can move in faster, but also exit faster. We’ll keep a close eye on Friday and the timing of cold air, but it has the potential to see 20’s as highs and teens overnight for lows; then we very slowly modify through the weekend with maybe a flurry or two. If the cold air doesn’t materialize, we’ll still be a (normal) wintry low to mid 30’s.
Stay tuned.
