WINTRY PATTERN UNFOLDING NEXT WEEK – Good afternoon everyone. Near to slightly above normal temps will be the name of the game for the next several days, but an abrupt change change is on its way and we’ve been watching for this for the past couple of weeks.
First off, we have a cloudy early afternoon with the approach of a weak system. It’ll be near 50 today, but it feels much cooler and damp with moisture in the air. It almost feels as if snow is in the air, but not quite yet, at least for this week. We’ll have the slight chance of rain tonight, then the sun and low 50’s return for tomorrow. It’ll be breezy, so those 50’s will feel like 40’s at times.
Saturday, cooler air moves in and we won’t break the 40’s, but 50’s return again for Sunday, then near 50 Monday. Another system approaches for Tuesday, and we should be in the “warm” sector on this one, with the chance of some rain and highs in the 50’s.
After mid-week next week, all bets are off. We have a major pattern change on it’s way and temps will be more below normal than normal. Depending on the jet stream and the timing of systems as this colder air moves in, will determine whether we see our first measurable snows or not.
While I’m not about to call for snow for our area just yet, even though models are pointing in that direction; I’ll say that models are starting to put more snow on the map compared to weeks prior. This means that colder air, more vigorous systems, and a pattern change that’ll increase the chance of some snow in our area. Can a Nor’easter/snowstorm happen late next week or weekend? Yes, but with the way models have been, I’d take anything they predict a week out in terms of systems with a grain of salt.
At minimum, we’ll decent shot at some snow upstate at some point in the next 2 weeks, and the increased chance of a cheap thrill for our area in that same time period. We will keep an eye for any significant systems that might coincide with any shots of colder air and watch our pattern change with a level-headed approach.
