ACTIVE NYC PATTERN BEGINS METEOROLOGICAL SPRING
ACTIVE NYC PATTERN BEGINS METEOROLOGICAL SPRING – Good morning everyone and welcome to the time of year in which we can experience 3 out of 4 seasons in a matter of a week. Yesterday, we saw severe thunderstorms transit the northeast corridor and get very close to the NYC area before fizzling out to just a prolonged period of thundershowers. While this was considered a rare event, last year on the same exact date, we had some severe weather actually survive the trip into our area, giving some places gusts in excess of 68mph; so while it is rare, it does happen.
With the passage of this sharp cold front, it has replaced our unseasonably warm weather, with a sunny, cool, windy day. Tonight will be seasonably cool, with winds calming down somewhat, and lows in the low to mid 30’s, possibly some 20’s north and west of NYC. Tomorrow, we watch the approach of yet another system. After some morning sun, clouds and wind will increase once again, but it’ll be warmer tomorrow with highs in the low to mid 50’s. On Tuesday, a warm front will come across the area as low pressure will lift well to our north and west of the NYC area. There will be a slight chance of some light showers as this process takes place, with highs again in the low to mid 50’s. Overnight Tuesday, the threat of rain will continue and increase as a cold front that will pass on Wednesday, inches closer. We’ll have a chance at some steadier rain on Wednesday, with highs in the mid 60’s, possibly 70 if we can squeeze out some extra sunshine before the front passes and cold air moves back in.
ACTIVE NYC PATTERN BEGINS METEOROLOGICAL SPRING – Meteorological Spring starts Wednesday, and it will feel as such; however, after a slight lag of unseasonably mild air sticking around for Thursday, with highs 55-60, unseasonably cold air moves in for Friday. As of now, there will be a slight chance of light snow and/or flurries as the cold air moves across the area on Friday, with highs only in the mid 30’s, but it doesn’t look significant at this point. This will help keep the cold air in for Saturday, with highs in the low to mid 30’s, but it won’t last long as another system heads in and brings mild air in temporarily in for the end of next week weekend and into the beginning of the week. Then, cold air looks to move back in for mid week after next weekend.
Essentially, we have a very active pattern shaping up, with periods of unseasonably cool air and periods of unseanbaly warm air. How this all times out will determine if we have one more shot at a moderate snow event.
Satellite View
With yesterdays cold front well to our east, dry and cool air heads in temporarily until our next system Tuesday into Wednesday.
Northeast Radar
Radar is quiet aside from some lake effect snow/rain showers, but they won’t make it into the NYC area.
