SEVERE STORM WATCHES AROUND NYC VICINITY
SEVERE STORM WATCHES AROUND NYC VICINITY – Good late afternoon everyone! I’m taking a quick break from my vacation to being to you an update on a line of severe storms marching eastward associated with a sharp cold front transiting our area.
As I’m watching everything unfold, it looks as if a bow echo is forming in eastern Pennsylvania before if starts to head into New Jersey. Also, Tornado warnings have broken out in the Catskill areas of NY as individual cells are showing signs of rotation. Expect strong straight-line winds, frequent lightning, torrential downpours, and possibly some small hail associated with this line; as well as the chance of an isolated tornado as we see that unfolding.

Individual cells are racing North/Northeast, but the line itself is marching east and will be in our area within the next couple of hours. As far as the NYC area, severe storm watches have been extended just to the west of the Jersey City/Hoboken area, but stop just before New York City. This is because the timing of sunset and the marine air influence may play a role in cutting the storms down to under severe limits. A few days ago I said in order for us to get any storms in the area, we’d have to see a very strong line set up in order to survive the trip. This looks to be the case and we should see some heavy rain, gusty winds, and a few rumbles of thunder as the cold front makes it’s final pass, especially on the north shore of Queens, the Bronx, and areas away from the immediate Atlantic Coast.
After this area of energy passes, temps will plummet and things will clear out tonight. Winds will increase and we’ll have a cold blustery night, with lows in the mid to upper 30’s. West winds will remain strong tomorrow, with sunny skies and highs in the mid 40’s, a big departure from yesterday and today’s temperatures.
