Another Impressive Storm Expected Overnight Friday

Good morning everyone. Our parade of systems continues, with our very impressive storm exiting the area as we speak, and another one lining up for the East Coast late Friday. Yesterday’s storm dumped torrential rain up & down the East Coast, and there were several reported tornadoes from North Carolina on south to Florida.

We’ll begin to dry out today and we will clear all of the hazards except for the flooding risk in the Northeast with snowmelt combined with the copious amounts of rain. That’ll help the already-swollen rivers and streams spill over their banks and cause widespread flooding, especially in NW NJ, NE PA, and the Lower Hudson Valley of NY.

Our next system will be another doozy in terms of bringing more blizzard-like conditions to parts of the Midwest, possibly including Chicago this time. I don’t think we will see widespread severe weather on the scale we just saw, but we can still see some stronger thunderstorms across the Southeast; and flooding will be an issue again for the Northeast with a soaking rain.

Once that clears, we look to the long range in what could be a very cold push of air midweek next week. We’ll be watching the Polar Vortex very closely as we might see it influence the next stage of winter. At minimum, I think we see a push of arctic air midweek next week into the Upper Plains and Ohio River Valley with some frigid readings at night; but the question remains whether it’ll make it all the way to the East Coast.

Stay tuned and we will watch closely. Here is your local forecast –

We have one last push of drizzle and light rain here in the NYC Metro Area, then clouds will linger. Look for highs in the near 50 range, then dropping before sunset. Tomorrow is a relatively pleasant day here for January, with sunshine, much lighter winds, and highs in the mid to upper 40’s.

WEATHER RADAR

We start out with sunshine Friday, then clouds begin to increase. I think rain holds off for much of the day, then we’ll have the chance of some light rain by late afternoon/evening. Highs in the mid 50’s. Rain will increase in intensity, along with the wind overnight.

For your weekend, we start off mild Saturday morning with some AM rain, then temps drop again before sunset. Highs early will be 55-60, then we’re in the upper 20’s to near 30 overnight. Sunday looks cold and blustery, with highs in the low to mid 30’s for a true winter day.
