Arctic Air on the Move Behind Wide Ranging System
Good morning everyone. For areas of the Northeast, we have broken the “snow drought” as a general 2-3″ of snow has fallen throughout the region. There are a few higher amounts AND lower amounts, but it’s been a light snowfall for the most part.
We’re now onto the icy part of the program as “warmer” air has infiltrated the mid-layers of the atmosphere, yet surface temps remain in the 20’s to near 30. This will cause a problem with icing in areas that do see a changeover to sleet and freezing rain. It all turns back to snow briefly before ending, and we shouldn’t see much more accumulation. Be careful overnight as it will all turn into a crunchy/slippery layer of ice with temps dipping into the teens.
The big story is the arctic air, something we’ve been talking about for almost 2 weeks now. It’s on the move and going to penetrate into the Deep South, with hard freeze warnings issued as temps are expected to dip into the 20-25 realm all the way to the Gulf Coast and northern Florida. Things should modify slightly, but then we get another hit over the weekend behind our next system that’ll bring another round of light snow into parts of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Tennessee Valley.
Here is your local forecast –
SATELLITE
Look for light snow today turning to light mix, then back to snow before it all ends. We’ll have highs in the upper 20’s to near 30, and total snowfall should be in the 2-4″ realm with locally higher amounts in areas that stayed all snow (with no breaks in the precip). It’s going to be very cold overnight, with lows in the 15-20 range, helping to created that crunchy/icy coating.
WEATHER RADAR
The sun returns tomorrow, but it’ll be useless as temps barely reach the mid 20’s; maybe a few upper 20’s. Lows overnight won’t dip much as the modification already begins. Looks for lows to drop maybe 2-3 degrees from our highs.
We’ll have increasing clouds Thursday, with temps in the near 30/low 30 range; then a slight chance of some light snow overnight Thursday. We keep the chance of some very light snow in the area for Friday with more low 30 temps. Right now it looks like a trace – 1″, if anything at all. We’ll keep an eye on that since today’s system grew a little more vigorous at the very end, but it could go either way at this point.
Your weekend looks cold, blustery, and sunny. Saturday will be the worst of the two, with mid to upper 20’s as highs and teens overnight. Sunday we modify a bit, with near 30/low 30 temps.
