BITTER NYC COLD TONIGHT LARGE FLUCTUATIONS AHEAD
BITTER NYC COLD TONIGHT LARGE FLUCTUATIONS AHEAD – Good afternoon everyone! Bitter cold air has made it’s way into the area, with temperatures barely reaching 30 in many places. Frigid air and wind will be the theme tonight, but the wind will keep the temperatures from plummeting to their potential lows. That being said, they will still be in the mid teens, way below normal for March, and possibly some record breaking lows in areas of Long Island and North & West of NYC.
Cold air will remain in the area tomorrow and tomorrow night, with sunny skies, less wind, highs in the low to mid 30’s and lows in the low to mid 20’s. On Monday, we begin to warm up again as a new system approaches the area; increasing clouds and highs near 50. Tuesday will be cloudy with a slight chance of rain, with temps around 55-60. The chance of rain increases Tuesday night as a steadier batch of precip will make it’s way in. Things clear out on Wednesday as the system passes and a delay of cool air will ensue, with partial clearing and highs 55-60 again.
We begin to cool off again Thursday and Friday, sunny and breezy both days with highs in the mid 40’s. Then comes the elephant in the room….
BITTER NYC COLD TONIGHT LARGE FLUCTUATIONS AHEAD
As of this morning, the Euro model has a low pressure system dropping in from the midwest, transferring it’s energy to the Maryland/Virginia coast, then racing off into the Gulf of Maine as cold air phases in. This particular Blizzard/Nor’easter scenario has the potential (if it were to happen) to bring us historic level snows/winter conditions into the NYC area. Models have been unreliable all season and the GFS has a different story, a familiar story….
The GFS model at the same time and date, puts us in a familiar position; with a fairly strong low pressure system racing off well to our north and west, putting us into the warm sector of another system. While both models have been consistently unreliable, this seems to match the theme of the season. However, we cannot rule out the EURO scenario as things have become increasingly volatile and cold air is fighting back hard, with today as a good example. Will the low race into Canada? Will it bomb out off of our coast? Will it be something in between? Time will tell and we will be keeping a close eye on this as it unfolds.
