SNOW SQUALLS BITTER COLD NYC NIGHT AHEAD – Good late morning everyone! Cold weather is upon us and as stated a several days ago, an upper level low associated with reinforcing shot of bitter cold air will transit the NYC area later this afternoon/evening. This will touch off a fast moving area of moderate to heavy snow and wind. Where it sets up and how fast it moves, will determine what we see, but the NYC area has the potential of seeing a quick coating to an inch if the area stays intact and we end up seeing the heaviest of snow. This will all be known in due time and I will give live updates on Angry Ben’s Angry Weather on Facebook as things unfold.
Once this area of snow squalls passes, bitter cold air will set in and we’ll have January-like lows here tonight near 20 degrees and blustery. Tomorrow, things won’t warm up much, even with the March sun; highs in the low 30’s and again, windy. Tomorrow night will be even colder, as winds eventually calm down and allow for some radiational cooling. Low’s tomorrow night will be in the mid teens, with possibly some single digits and record breaking lows out on Long Island and Northwest of the NYC area.
On Sunday it will remain cold, but won’t feel as bad with relatively calm winds, highs in the mid 30’s. Monday, we begin to warm up a little bit with the approach of a warm front and highs near 50 with increasing clouds. For the latest long range outlook, you can check out my discussion from yesterday here.
Satellite View
The milk white signature of an upper level low and cold air is easily visible coming through the Great Lakes area and will be swooping down across NYC in the late afternoon/evening.
Northeast Radar
Satellite is picking up a fast moving area of moderate to heavy snow. For those that do see any action, it won’t amount to much, but it can easily put down a coating to an inch in a very short amount of time.
