Coastal Storm Expected Early Next Week
02/09/24 10:30am ET
Good morning everyone. We continue to watch mild air moving into the Northeast, only to be replaced by a coastal storm early next week and some wintry conditions. There’s still a long way to go on this in terms of establishing rain/snow lines and who gets what, but we do know that the genesis of this system will touch off more heavy rain and embedded severe weather along the Gulf States & parts of the Southeast.
Low pressure is in the process of emerging from the lower Rockies and will begin to reorganize in Central Texas. As far as timelines, we’re looking for heavy rain and severe weather to develop some time late tomorrow afternoon into the evening, then march east into Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, then possibly into the Panhandle of Florida and parts of Georgia as we go into Sunday/Monday from west to east. We’re also expecting some heavy snows in the NW quadrant of this system, which will mainly impact the Texas Panhandle and SW Oklahoma.
Our low pressure will then begin to race northeast and transfer its energy somewhere off the coast of the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast. It remains too early to tell, but anywhere in the northern tier of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and New England, need to watch this one carefully. This remains a 6-12″+ type dumping of heavy, wet snow, for those who see all snow. In big cities such as NYC, we could see rain changing to a mix or heavy snow on the back end. If our system goes further south and cold air is stubborn, that changeover could happen sooner.
Stay tuned and we will try and hone in the forecast and timeline for our big cities in the Northeast and New England. Here is your local NYC Metro Area forecast –
SATELLITE
Look for a mix of sun & clouds today with mild conditions. Highs in the low 50’s. Clouds increase tomorrow with the slight chance of showers and very mild. Highs in the mid to upper 50’s depending on what little sunshine we get. Clouds thin out a bit on Saturday for another mild one in the near 50 realm.
WEATHER RADAR
Monday is when things become to get tricky. Expect increasing clouds and low to mid 40’s for highs. Light rain could sneak in some time in between late morning and late afternoon, possibly mixing with snow late. We could see some more mixing Monday night as we drop into the low to mid 30’s. (This is all subject to change with the final positioning of our coastal low).
Any mix or rain Tuesday should change to all snow if it didn’t change already. We are holding off on accumulation numbers for obvious reasons because we are not quite there yet. Highs 35-40.
