Coastal Storm Takes Shape Tonight Off Long Island
04/03/24 9:17am ET
Good morning everyone. The pieces of our April snowstorm for parts of upper New York and New England are starting to come together, with all of the ingredients happening on schedule. That line of severe weather has made it into the Southeast, impacting parts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
Tornado watches are in effect in north Florida and southeast Georgia as a wave of low pressure begins to develop and a trailing cold front gets stronger. Look for that slow moving line to bring damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility for isolated tornadoes. All of that energy, including our original low pressure in the Great Lakes region, will combine and redevelop off of the New Jersey and Long Island coast to create a monster storm for New England and upper New York.
Heavy rain will change to heavy snow as cold air locks in and cold air is pulled down through the atmosphere with the help of heavy convection. In higher elevations and parts of Maine, 18-24″ is possible where that heaviest convection occurs. We’ll also have strong winds to deal with, even in areas that see all rain. Winds along the immediate Northeast coast, could see wind gusts of 60+ mph, especially for the Forks of Long Island, Block Island, Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard. The time frame for the heaviest precip in New England remains tonight into tomorrow night.
Here is your local NYC forecast –
SATELLITE
Look for on and off rain today, heavy at times with a few rumbles of thunder possible. It’ll be a raw one as temps remain steady in the low to mid 40’s, and winds will begin to increase. Looks for 45-50mph wind gusts in NYC itself, and 50-60+ mph gusts along the immediate shore, especially overnight tonight.
WEATHER RADAR
Heavy rain tapers off to scattered scattered showers tomorrow. We’ll remain cloudy and cool in the 45-50 range, and strong winds will begin to subside as low pressure drifts into New England.
Low pressure will continue to keep the atmosphere destabilized, so Friday sunshine will spark more clouds and popcorn showers in the afternoon. Highs near 50 again.
We fully dry out on Saturday, but clouds stick around with near 50 temps again. Look for more sunshine on Sunday as highs start to modify into the 55-60 range.
