Major Snowstorm Strikes Interior New York & New England Tomorrow Night
04/02/24 9:29am ET
Good morning everyone. We continue to watch a major storm take shape as it spreads severe weather into parts of Kentucky, brings periods of rain across the Ohio River Valley, then expected to redevelop near-shore/offshore of Long Island and New England.
As of this moment, tornado watches have been posted across a large swatch of Kentucky and southern parts of Indiana. Tornado warnings have been popping up as radar-indicated rotation has been seen, as well as funnel clouds spotted across the watch area. This will continue on as low pressure begins to fizzle out and transfer energy to the coast.
As this process happens, we will see a new wave form in the Southeast this afternoon. As it does, we will watch severe storms redevelop in parts of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, NW Arkansas, SE Missouri, and back into Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. Eventually the lower half of the line will dip into Georgia and South Carolina tonight into tomorrow. Expect damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes in these areas.
Once low pressure really gets going off of the Northeast coast, it’ll help lock in and pull down cold air. As convection intensifies, we will add evaporative cooling to the mix, helping to change heavy rain to heavy snow in parts of Upstate New York. Higher elevation areas in the Catskills up into the Adirondacks, could see 1-2 feet or more of snow depending on where the heaviest convection sets up. Up in New England, 18-24″+ of snow is likely in interior sections, but dipping down to near-coastal sections of Maine depending on the final setup and convective areas. In some cases, thundershowers will be experienced where the heaviest bands set up. As stated yesterday, do not be surprised if we see some blizzard warnings ooo up as low pressure deepens and wind increases/visibility drops.
This is a major storm, and a rare one at that due to the timing and location of the heavy snow expected. Here is your local NYC Metro Forecast –
SATELLITE
On and off rain continues today with raw temps in the upper 40’s. We dip down a bit into the mid 40’s tomorrow as rain increases in intensity. Look for some rumbles of thunder as well when low pressure begins to deepen. Winds will increase, with gusts nearing 40mph, possibly 50mph at the immediate shore.
WEATHER RADAR
Clouds stick around Thursday with early AM rain and highs 45-50. Right before things end, we could see a few wet flakes or sleet pellets mixed in.
Look for sunshine and a steady breeze Friday with highs near 50, which is very cool for this time of year in NYC.
