COLD TASTE ARRIVES EARLIER BEFORE LARGER BLAST

COLD TASTE ARRIVES EARLIER BEFORE LARGER BLAST – After a springtime taste of near 60 degree temps and brief thunderstorms, seasonably cold air has returned to the region and so has the wind. Unsuspecting to most, the gears are in motion for our pattern change, but we still have to get through a series of systems before this happens.

Clearing skies and a west/northwest breeze will help usher in much cooler air than we’ve experienced over the past few days. Look for temps to drop through the 40’s and into the 30’s as the day wears on. 20-25 will be on tap tonight, with a crisp wind chill in the teens due to that ongoing breeze. Sunny skies and a stiff breeze continue tomorrow, highs in the mid 30’s.

Winds finally calm down by late morning on Friday and we’ll see upper 30’s to near 40, then warmer air pushes back in ahead of another rainmaker. Look for essentially a carbon-copy system from the we just had, with 50-55 degree temps and increasing clouds late Saturday; then, rain moves back in on Sunday, maybe a few rumbles of thunder again, highs in the low to mid 50’s.

Once again, seasonably cold air moves back in for early next week, then we watch for another system late in the week or during that weekend. As of now, it looks as if this will be the one to bring in a shot of arctic air, helping it arrive slightly earlier than originally thought (Feb 3-5); but it doesn’t look to last very long. For the time being, this shot looks to come across the Great Lakes region and down, which means it’ll modify quickly ahead of the next system in the first 1/3 of February.

Arctic air will continue to recharge and build up in Canada, with a larger system helping to bring down the bulk of that air. So as of now, we’ll continue our ups and downs for the next 10 days or so, then a taste of the arctic air, followed by another warmup, then another, much larger blast. We’ll be watching to see if that warmup between cold air masses collapses, because this could be the signature of a colder system and the opportunity for some snow.
