Cool Conditions Take Over NYC

Cool Conditions Take Over NYC

04/30/24 10:03am ET

Good morning everyone. We caught a bit of a break last night in Tennessee and Kentucky as thunderstorms mostly remained on the “heavy” side instead of severe. We did see some localized reports of severe weather with some hail and flooding rains, but we thankfully did not see a repeat of the events from a couple of nights ago.

Unfortunately, we will see an enhanced risk of tornadic activity return in the Midwest, as a new wave of low pressure exits the Rockies, and once again have access to Gulf moisture streaming up the plains. This is very similar to the weather pattern we saw during the 1980’s, which kept the “Tornado Alley” reputation alive; but it’s something we haven’t seen a while, so folks aren’t quite used to it anymore.

We’re already beginning to see some thunderstorm action in parts of Nebraska and Iowa, but the most intense storms are not expected to begin to form until some time between this evening and overnight hours. At that point, we will watch clusters of storms develop, some into individual lines, and move from west to east. This will not be one big line like we saw 2 nights ago, and some areas may get lucky and not see any action. However, we do expect several clusters and lines to stretch from Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota, down to Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Eventually Arkansas and Missouri could see some action before the line fizzles out again.

Any storms from this afternoon, onward, could contain large hail, damaging winds, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and strong tornadoes. While a massive tornado outbreak like we saw a couple of nights ago is unlikely, we could see activity that borders on a moderate tornado outbreak in spots. Please stay tuned to your local agencies, and be prepared to take action in order to protect property and life.
