Dreary Day Expected Today in NYC

Dreary Day Expected Today in NYC

05/15/24 9:17am ET

Good morning everyone. Clouds are socked-in for a large majority of the Northeast, where low pressure is semi cut-off and moving very slowly to and off of the coast. That system is associated with all of the severe weather we saw in the Lower Plains and Southeast, and the tail end of that system is still bringing severe weather to parts of Florida.

Tornado watches remain in parts of Central Florida, where a thin line of strong thunderstorms have had a history of large hail and damaging winds. That line stretches from Cape Canaveral west/southwest into Tampa and is slowly meandering to the east/southeast. Tornado watches remain in effect until 11am ET, and we should see those watches expire at or before that time. While we don’t see a widespread outbreak of tornadic activity, isolated tornadoes and/or waterspouts are possible with individual cells.

Another area we’ll begin watching for severe weather risks will be Texas, where we’re expecting severe thunderstorms to return come tomorrow afternoon and evening. Look for severe thunderstorm watches to be issued in parts of the state, and possibly some tornado watches if things really ramp up. Timing looks to be late morning, where will will see some scattered action in northern Texas and parts of Oklahoma, then growing into a line and pushing through into eastern Texas. Eventually, we will see heavy showers and storms spread into Louisiana overnight tomorrow and into the early morning hours.

The main risk associated with these storms will be frequent lighting, torrential rain, damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility for isolated strong tornadoes. Also look for more flash flood watches posted since the ground is now oversaturated.
