FIRST NYC MAJOR 2018 HEATWAVE POSSIBLE STARTING LATE WEEK

FIRST NYC MAJOR 2018 HEATWAVE POSSIBLE STARTING LATE WEEK – Good cloudy morning everyone. Today’s initial forecast seems to be falling apart, but the pieces are starting to come together for a possible major heat wave late week next week for the NYC area (and everywhere else).

For today, clouds will hang on till late morning. A few peaks of sun later on could help us get into the low 80’s. With the clouds, there will also be the slight chance of a shower or rumble of thunder. Overnight, another round of rain and thunder is possible before a northerly flow helps clear things out tomorrow.

Tomorrow, dry air moves in and things should be comfortable for a few days. Expect clearing skies tomorrow with a northerly breeze, highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. Light winds, dry air and comfortable temps stick around for Tuesday, highs again in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. Bright sunshine remains for Wednesday, then increasing clouds late, highs 80-85.

Thursday is when things start getting interesting. The increasing clouds Wednesday/Wednesday night, will be from the leading edge of a powerful ridge building to our west and spreading east. We could see a round of heavy thunderstorms as we transfer from relatively seasonable air, to hot and humid air sometime Thursday morning to Thursday afternoon. As of this moment, highs look to be near 90 and humid.

On Friday, the dome of heat settles into the area full time. Expect a sunny, hazy, hot and humid 90-95 Friday, 90-95 Saturday, with temps reaching near-record levels. Then, we turn up the juice even more for Sunday as we go for the 1964 record of 97. Look for highs 95-100+ possible Sunday, and the ridge tries to hold on past July 4th and into late week that week. Throughout this period (this Friday through the following Thursday), we could see records tied or records fall.

Also, when the ridge breaks down, we could see a round of widespread severe weather. However, in the long range, the heat wants to pump back in after any brief break, making for a hot, above average  July overall.
