Florida Faces Severe Weather Before Nor’Easter Impacts Entire Coast
Good morning everyone. We continue to watch weather events unfold as a semi-rare Gulf-sourced Nor’Easter begins its genesis and impacts the entire East Coast in one form or another. First up in the batter’s box will be Florida, where severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and widespread flooding is expected.
Heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms will begin to make its way across Florida some time early tomorrow morning as low pressure deepens in the Gulf and moves across the area. Right now it is too early to pinpoint exactly who will see the strongest storms, but this is a big area of moisture and the entire state will be impacted in one way or another. For coastal sections, look for coastal flooding similar to what you’d see during a weak to moderate Tropical Storm and winds gusting to 50mph in spots. We could also see numerous water spouts just offshore for both the east and west coasts of Florida.
Flash flooding will also be an issue due to copious amounts of rain, and we will be dealing with a severe component as well as thunderstorms fire up. Some of those storms will produce torrential rain, locally stronger winds, large hail, and the possibility for some tornadoes. The threat in Florida should end some time between overnight Saturday and early morning Sunday, then everything slides northward.
Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina will be in the crosshairs too as flooding rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms spread across the area Saturday into Sunday. Flood watches will likely be needed as torrential rain soaks areas that already received a good amount last week. Winds along the immediate shore, especially for the Outer Banks of North Carolina, could gust between 45-55mph.
The Northeast is looking good till Sunday, then we begin to see the impacts of our Nor’easter. Again, this is a mostly rain and wind event. These types of systems are generally too warm to generate a large swath of snow this time of year. However, if that low sticks around long enough and moisture is still here by Tuesday, we could see a departing mix or some wet flakes. For now, we will focus on Florida and Southeast, then shift to the Tri-State on Sunday for a detailed look.
Your local forecast is below –
SATELLITE
We have sunshine today for the best day of the workweek. Expect light winds and highs 50-55. Sunshine continues for at least most of tomorrow, with gradual increasing clouds late. We should have enough sunshine to break 50 again tomorrow, possibly even some mid 50’s again.
WEATHER RADAR
Look for clouds to lower and thicken on Sunday, with light developing by late morning/early afternoon. Rain will become steadier and wind speeds will increase as well. Highs in the low to mid 50’s. Overnight, we’ll have rain, heavy at times, and temps remaining steady or rising slightly. Winds along the immediate shore could gust 45-60mph depending on location and the strength of our system.
Rain and wind continues on Monday, but should begin to lighten up late in the day. Highs a humid mid to upper 50’s with that warm Gulf low.
We’ll hold off on Tuesday, but again, if moisture is still here, we could see light rain ending as a light mix or some wet flakes.
