Gloomy Weather Drapes Itself Over NYC
05/12/24 12:15pm ET
Good morning everyone. The gloom has returned for the NYC area and many parts of the Northeast, with unseasonably cool conditions, cloudy skies, and showers lurking about. The good news is that it doesn’t last in terms of the raw conditions, but we will have some broad temperature swings this workweek. Regardless, we should pull off some 70’s 3 of 5 days of the week, with 60’s the other 2 days.
We continue to watch severe weather in east/southeast Texas, and that action will eventually spread into Louisiana and Arkansas as the day wears on. So far we’ve seen individual clusters within a broader complex, touch off severe thunderstorms warnings. These storms have produced golfball-sized hail, frequent lightning, and winds in excess of 60mph in spots. Severe storms are expected to continue, bringing similar conditions to the east.
We’re also watching the prospect for more severe weather in parts of Kansas and Missouri later at night, and this batch may come with either severe thunderstorm watches or tornado watches as low pressure emerges from the Rockies. This will eventually organize tomorrow and go over spots already hit later today in Arkansas, then impact parts of Mississippi and Alabama. Look for damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility for some tornadoes in regards.
Come tomorrow later afternoon, that action might be knocking on Atlanta as an organized line stretches from northwest Georgia into central Alabama and Mississippi. Parts of South Carolina may also be impacted by severe weather come Tuesday afternoon as that energy slides to the east. Unfortunately in between now and then, we will see reoccurring severe storms in the South and Southeast.
This will be a fluid situation, so stay tuned to your local agencies for the latest watches and warnings. Just because you got hit once, doesn’t mean it’s over. We could see several lines or clusters go over the same areas over the course of the next couple of days.
