NYC Clouds Dash Aurora Viewing Hopes

NYC Clouds Dash Aurora Viewing Hopes

05/11/24 11:17am ET

Last night made for some great viewing of our Aurora Borealis as a very rare geomagnetic storm took place. In what was the strongest geomagnetic storm witnessed in over 20 years, people were treated to an Aurora that was seen well further south than originally forecasted. Folks were delighted by the Northern Lights all the way down into parts of Florida.

While today isn’t looking as intense, it’s quite possible that we could see our Northern Lights creep into the south as well. We’re not sure if Florida will get the rare treat again, but at least the weather will be there to cooperate. We’re expecting clear to mostly clear skies from the Northern Plains, parts of the Central States, and into the Southeast. Our best chance to see the lights will of course be in the Northern tier, but be prepared to catch some views in your area just in case the intensity is close to yesterday.

Unfortunately for the Northeast, clouds will hinder viewing once again as a small system runs through the Great Lakes, sending clouds and showers from parts of Ohio, into Pennsylvania, and eastward. Things should clear out in Ohio for a chance at some good night skywatching.

Here is your local NYC Metro forecast –

SATELLITE

storm free

We’re staring off with mostly sunny skies this morning and near 60 degree temps, but we don’t climb much higher than that, and we should hang out in the low to mid 60’s at best. Clouds will lower and thicken tonight, dashing hopes for any good viewing of our Aurora Borealis. Look for another raw day tomorrow, with clouds, showers, and temps stuck in the 50’s.

WEATHER RADAR

We clear out on Monday with mostly sunny skies and highs 65-70, then we go for low 70’s and some showers on Tuesday. More showers are expected on Wednesday as we remain seasonable and in the low 70’s.

Things should finally settle down on Thursday and Friday, with some sunshine and more 70’s.
