May Brings November Day to NYC

May Brings November Day to NYC

05/10/24 7:45am ET

Good morning everyone. Gloom has dug its nails into the Northeast and refuses to let go as maritime air makes for a very damp and raw day today. Things will slowly clear out, but remain cool tomorrow before clouds, showers, and raw conditions return on Sunday. The good news for the Northeast is that seasonably mild air makes a big comeback to start the workweek and should stick around for a little while.

Our main issue around the Lower 48 remains the severe weather, which has now shifted its eyes on northern Florida, South Georgia, and the SE corner of Alabama. We have big problems as that complex of storms continues to spawn numerous tornadoes. As I type this, we have tornado warnings in Valdosta, Georgia and parts of the Florida Panhandle just over the border of Valdosta.

This is a serious batch of thunderstorms we are dealing with, capable of damaging straight-line winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and flooding rains as it all races to the east. The good news is that we are expecting this system to peter-out by late morning, the bad news is that we still have plenty of energy left; and we are expecting the severe weather risk to shift to South & North Carolina.

Look for a new line of severe weather to develop this evening over the interior coastal plains of South & North Carolina. Things will start off as scattered, individual cells, then organize and race to the east/southeast. Cities such as Wilmington and Myrtle Beach fall under the risk of severe weather and damaging thunderstorms. The timeline on this looks to be sometime between 6 and 10pm tonight. Other areas such as the Outer Banks, could also get rocked by thunderstorms with damaging winds.

Stay tuned to your local agencies for the latest watches and warnings. Here is your local NYC forecast –
