ICE ISSUES SUBSTITUTE CHARLOTTE SNOWSTORM INSTEAD

ICE ISSUES SUBSTITUTE CHARLOTTE SNOWSTORM INSTEAD

Good morning everyone. The cold air just couldn’t make it all the way through the state of North Carolina to give Charlotte a good dose of snow. Instead, things remain icy as snow was brief to occur overnight and colder air up in the atmosphere retreated.

Meanwhile up in our area, there is no snow on the immediate horizon and we’ll climb out of the basement temp-wise by the end of the upcoming week with the help of an approaching system.

EASTERN SATELLITE

For our area, a ground ball, easy forecast continues. Expect cold, dry air to remain locked in the area through Thursday.  Clouds linger today with that reinforcing shot of colder air passing by, but sun returns tomorrow. Look for highs today in the upper 30’s and that range should remain all the way to Thursday.

REGIONAL RADAR

On Friday, warmer air pushes in ahead of our next approaching system. Increasing clouds will be on the menu and highs in the upper 40’s to near 50. The timing isn’t narrowed down perfectly yet, but we should see rain creep in at some point between Friday late night and before sunrise Saturday morning. Rain will be heavy at times Saturday and we should see upper 40’s to low 50’s.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Depending on the exact timing of our next system, we could see lingering clouds and sprinkles on Sunday, with temps dropping as the day goes on. Colder air will filter in for the following week, and we start the process all over again. As of now, my Hail-Mary Christmas Day forecast of sunny, windy, and cold, remains holding strong.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

For our ongoing storm down in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, cold air just couldn’t hold on for Charlotte, NC. I watched the radar all night and cold air crept down from the north by midnight; giving those waiting and watching a little snowy show in some areas. However, it just couldn’t hang on and what should’ve been a snowy morning, has become an icy problem instead.

We expected a period of rain first, then ice and snow, then snow, and back to ice. Now it’ll be a rainy and icy event all the way through. That being said, very dangerous travel conditions remain and don’t be fooled by the lack of snow. The big problem was always the ice. Whether it be a layer of ice under the snow or just a coating of ice, a frozen layer on the roads is worse that anything snow can give.

So stay off of the roads today, even in areas such as Raleigh who are straddling the freezing rain/snow line as well. It’s just not worth getting into a multi-car accident or getting stuck in traffic because of one. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect because of this very issue.
