JANUARY THAW BREEDS NORTHEAST RAINMAKER

JANUARY THAW BREEDS NORTHEAST RAINMAKER – Good morning everyone. Our January thaw has arrived and a beautiful Saturday is about to unfold, but as with any warmup in January, there’s always a flip side in the form of large swaths of rain.

Look for sunny skies, low to mid 50’s, and a westerly breeze today. Remember, it’s still winter, so it’ll feel cooler with the breeze but it’s still a nice change from the teens and 20’s we experienced. Tomorrow, we cool off a little bit as a front dips down, but the west winds continue as opposed to the typical northeast winds of a backdoor cold front, and we should see mid to upper 40’s.

Those easterlies return for Monday though ahead of a large warm front associated with a system coming in from the west. It’ll be cloudy and damp on Monday, with highs in the low 40’s and a slight chance of rain by evening. The chance of rain increases overnight Monday, then the main bulk of the rain moves in on Tuesday ahead of the cold front. With low pressure heading well north of our area, it’ll take the biggest rains with it. We should see some decent rain out of this, but areas to our north and northeast will see the heaviest of rain. Low to mid 50’s will be on tap for Tuesday, but look for temps to drop after the front passes by.

Wednesday through Friday, we’re back into the mid to upper 30’s, possibly near 40. Then, we await the approach of another big system for next weekend. This one might have a little more juice with it, as well as slower movement. The result could be an even warmer solution, with a similar setup rain-wise, but temps possibly near or breaking 60 until we cool off again the following Monday/Tuesday (Jan 29/30).

All in all, there are no big arctic blasts in sight, and with the jet stream steering these systems well to our north with a westward approach, there is also no snow in sight. Signs are building for another cold air invasion possible by late in the 1st or in the 2nd week of February. However, there are questions as to how it’ll unfold and how long it lasts. It’s quite possible it slips down across the Great Lakes and doesn’t resemble anything like we had in December and for the first half of January as far as severity or longevity.
