Major Winter Storm Likely This Weekend

Major Winter Storm Likely This Weekend

Good morning everyone. We continue to watch the weather models very closely to see how our winter storm is going to unfold, but we always like to keep the human element here and point out all of the facts and variations based on experience. If we strictly went by the models, our forecast would change every 4-6 hours with each oscillation, but we do not and the forecast has not changed in the big scheme of things.

What we do know and continue to know is that we are expecting a major winter storm here for areas of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and parts of New England. We also know the timing of this system and this will primarily be a Saturday/Sunday event aside from maybe some lingering departing snow in New England. Another feature we know is what this system will be capable of as far as snow amounts. For those who do see the business end of this system snow-wise, we are expecting a wide swath of 6-12″ of snow, with locally heaver amounts in higher elevations and where some heavier convection sets up (if it sets up). This will be a fast moving storm, so it’ll be capable of only so much.

What we don’t know yet is where that heavy snow is going to set up and where that rain/snow line is going to be. At this point, it is impossible to tell because there are so many factors involved. Predicting a system behind a system is no easy task, but we’ve been steady since day one when this feature began to show. Regardless of who experiences the snow, we can expect powerful winds, coastal flooding, and beach erosion associated with our Coastal Storm.

As stated before in prior articles, the best picture of where and what our winter storm will do, will probably be once Thursday’s offshore system departs. It’ll clear the air, we’ll see what’s behind it, and we will get a picture of where high pressure will set up & how stubborn it will or won’t be.

Stay tuned and we will give another update tomorrow. Here’s your local forecast for the NYC Metro Area –

Look for a full day of sunshine finally and a chilly but seasonable day today. It’ll be dry and highs will be in the low 40’s. Sunshine continues tomorrow with low to mid 40’s.

WEATHER RADAR

Thursday will feature AM clouds, then late PM clearing. Highs will remain in the low to mid 40’s, but then we go cold overnight behind that system looking to reinforce some cold air into the region. Lows will be in the mid to upper 20’s.

Friday is a sunny, breezy, and cold one, with highs in the mid to upper 30’s; more 20’s overnight.

The weekend forecast remains complicated. We’ll have AM sun on Saturday with increasing clouds. Highs should be in the upper 30’s to near 40. Depending on the timing of our system, we could see some light rain, light snow, or light mix entering the picture some time between afternoon and late evening. Winds will stiffen up, and we can expect windswept rain, mixed precip., or blowing snow Saturday night into Sunday.
