MODELS BEAR CLOSE WATCHING FOR NYC SNOW

MODELS BEAR CLOSE WATCHING FOR NYC SNOW – Good morning everyone. As the day went on yesterday and into the night, our short range model started to trend towards some of the other longer range models; showing a double-barrel low pressure system suppressed to our south and a precipitation field at or just south of Long Island. Meanwhile, unseasonably cool air continues during our short period of peace and calm.

Look for bright sunshine today and a northwest breeze, highs in the low to mid 40’s. Tomorrow, the breeze goes light, but we remain cool and in the low to mid 40’s. For Tuesday, whether we get some snow in the area or not, it’ll be a cloudy and raw day after clouds increase, highs in the upper 30’s.

Both the GFS and the NAM models agree that the mid-Atlantic (specifically the southern tip of NJ, VA, MD, and DE) is going to see a period of snow out of this, but questions remain as to how far north the precipitation field will get. Also, both models agree that we’ll have two pieces of energy develop along the coast, which complicates the forecast even further because models typically don’t do well deciphering this type of energy.

As of this moment, I’m not prepared to make a call in terms of whether we are going to get hit or not. It’s not time to have a sigh of relief, nor is time to get milk and eggs. We will be watching closely for the last-minute, northwest trend that has happened almost all winter. If it does pan out, we would have two seperate waves of precip with a break in between. If not, we will have a cloudy, raw, and windy Tuesday through Thursday.

In other news, it looks as if we have another 7-10 days of active weather and seasonably cool temps, then start to climb out of this rut in early April. Remember, patterns don’t last forever, even the strongest ones. So for those who are tired of this and can’t wait for spring to finally arrive, hold on.

Stay tuned as we continue to watch our possible Nor’easter and potential for some snow in the NYC area.
