New York City Tropical Update

New York City Tropical Update

Good morning everyone. We continue to watch the tropics as Tropical Storm Franklin will become a hurricane some time between tomorrow and Sunday morning; plus we are watching an area of favorable activity in the SW Caribbean. Franklin’s forecast continues and will continue to not be a direct threat to the East Coast of the United States. However, we are still watching for the likelihood of some rough surf developing some time between Sunday and Wednesday. This will create rough conditions in the inlets, as well as the increased risk for rip currents.

The favorable area of energy in the SW Caribbean is likely to develop into a tropical depression over the next few days, and we’ll be watching it very, closely. As of now, the EURO seems pretty aggressive as far as strengthening and path, but the GFS keeps things in the weak side. Either way, tropical moisture will likely head towards the west coast of Florida some time early to mid-week next week, then possibly up the Southeast coast. In past cases, the EURO has done the best job with systems that far south, while the GFS downplays them. Let’s wait and see how things play out.
