NYC ACTIVE PERIOD BREWING NEW YEARS EVE PREVIEW

NYC ACTIVE PERIOD BREWING NEW YEARS EVE PREVIEW

Good wet morning everyone. We have widespread problems here in the New York City area and surrounding parts with flooding from heavy rain overnight and early this morning. As promised, things should be spotty now in between waves of heavy rain, but there’s definitely more coming. Meanwhile, we have an active pattern brewing near and after our switchover to 2019.

EASTERN SATELLITE

More heavy rain is heading into the NYC metro area, but for the moment, we enjoy a windy, drizzly, foggy break. Don’t take your eye off the ball though because things are moving fast.

More Rain & Storms For NYC

As I’m typing this at 7:30am, we have at least 2 more batches of heavy rain and storms to get through. Because the ground is well oversaturated already, any bout of heavy rain will cause more flooring issues. Also, winds will be an issue, especially during these rounds of heavy showers and storms.

Coastal Flooding in flood-prone areas has also been an issue due to that strong easterly fetch first, now the southerly fetch combined with some help with the moon. Highs today in the upper 50’s to low 60’s.

Overnight, showers will begin to taper off and it looks like we may get through everything but the clouds by tomorrow morning.

REGIONAL RADAR

For your weekend, we’ll have partial clearing tomorrow but those 50’s and 60’s will be long gone. Expect a windy day and temps falling into the low 40’s by mid afternoon. Sunny skies prevail for Sunday and winds will begin to settle down, highs in the low 40’s. Don’t forget about the chance of a sprinkle or flurry overnight Sunday or  early Monday as a reinforcing shot of cold air heads in.

For Christmas Eve day, the path has been paved for a clear and dry holiday segment. Look for clearing skies, light to moderate winds, and highs in the low 40’s. Overnight, we’ll dip into a seasonably chilly 25-30 for most of the area.

Christmas Day is looking very seasonable and the only thing missing will be a dusting of snow to finish off the holiday picture. Otherwise, it’ll feel very Christmas-like with sunny skies and highs 35-40.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Moving beyond Christmas, we have a very active period brewing. Look for several systems similar to what we have today move across the area over the next couple of weeks.

We’ll be watching very closely in terms of variations in paths, because any type of shift will bring down (or keep in) cold air that’s more than available. Remember, we have plenty of cold air available to give us snow, but the system path is what’s causing the “problem” right now for snow lovers.

As of now, our next system in this parade will probably make it here by next Thursday/Friday and this one seems to be a vigorous one as well. Unless anything changes, it looks to be another rain-maker for us, but it could cause some frozen precip issues inland with some overrunning conditions until the main part of the system arrives.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

For New Years Eve, another system might be lurking in our area in close succession behind Thursday and Friday’s system. At this point, I’d still put models at a +/- 1 day margin of error, so it’s gonna be a close call.

There’s been a lot of hype on social media about a New Year’s Eve snowstorm, but it’s way too early to tell and New Year’s revelers might find themselves getting soaked with a cold, miserable rain, not snowed on.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on everything and I think with this active period brewing, one of these systems over the next couple of weeks will give us a more snow-friendly path; at least for some onset snows or rain changing to snow.
