NYC Beautiful Day Today Plus Ups & Downs Coming Into Focus
Good morning everyone. We have a beautiful day ahead of us before our next system moves through tomorrow. That’ll bring us another round of needed rain, then we go cool again. The long range is looking iffy, and we’ll discuss that below.
SATELLITE
For today, we have bright sunshine and a fairly mild day as cool air lags behind tomorrow’s system. It’ll also be on the breezy side (but not windy like yesterday eve), with NW winds in the 10-20mph realm. Look for highs in the mid to upper 60’s almost everywhere.
Clouds increase overnight, then rain moves in by late to mid morning tomorrow. Expect on and off rain, possibly heavy at times with another rumble of thunder. No severe weather is expected. The winds increase tomorrow ahead of the front, and we could see wind gusts to 30mph. Highs 55-60.
Cool air filters in to start the week, but we should modify quickly. Breezy conditions with full sunshine will pay a visit on Monday, with highs near 50. That sunshine will continue on Tuesday, but the breeze will calm down to make for a “warmer” feel. We should see mid 50’s by Tuesday.
Clouds increase again for our next system on Wednesday, but the precip chance at the moment is somewhat low. We’ll see a slight chance of showers, and return to low 60’s. Same goes for Thursday with the shower chance, and temps will probably sink into the low to mid 50’s.
Relatively cold air returns late week next week, and we may not get out of the 40’s on Friday.
As far as the long range is concerned, I see some issues brewing possibly after the first weekend in April. It looks as if the pattern wants to grind to a halt over the Northeast and/or New England. There’s a feature that’s been consistent on the GFS over the past week or so, which consists of low pressure retrograding back from Nova Scotia and into Maine/Lower Canada. It may not work out as depicted, but it’s a sign of a bigger issue, which usually points to the development of a cut-off low near the region. When cut-off lows develop, they have nowhere to go, continually spinning clouds, spokes of energy, and cool air across the region. These conditions could last a few days to more than a week.
There’s good news and bad news to this. The bad news is obvious, a gloomy period possible in the Northeast. The good news is that this is a typical function of spring in our region, and it typically happens a little later in the season (usually May). Maybe if the cut-off low does develop, we are one-and-done and get it over with; opening up the rest of April and May for a really fantastic spring.
Let’s see how it plays out, and we’ll be keeping an eye on it all.
