NYC BITTER COLD REGARDLESS STORM OUTCOME

Good morning everyone. For those who like to model watch, our late weekend system for New York City has become hostile towards snow for our area. We still have a long way to go on this and I’m focusing on the big story behind it, which in my mind is a sure-thing.

EASTERN SATELLITE

First, we have a sunny and seasonal day today, with light winds and highs in the mid 30’s. Tomorrow, we’re in the upper 30’s to near 40 range, but the wind will increase with a reinforcing shot of cold air. For Thursday, we dip back to slightly below normal with some low 30’s, and that may set the stage for some flakes overnight Thursday.

REGIONAL RADAR

We’re still trying to put the pieces together, but a weak area of low pressure will approach the region from the west. When it encounters the cold air, it looks as if it’ll give us a burst of snow Thursday night before changing to rain early Friday. Basically it’s looking like a quick shot of snow, then a quick shot of rain. Depending on how much moisture is involved, we could squeeze out a coating to 2″ before changing to rain. We’ll be watching very closely as weak systems and overrunning moisture need last minute adjustments at times.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Over the weekend, things remain uncertain and complicated for the entire Northeast. Things may be moving a little bit faster as our 2nd system basically drafts our first; which changes the destiny of all outcomes. A slightly earlier arrival would mean the system beats one of the ingredients needed to keep it further south and east. We’ll be watching very very closely as it’s still only Tuesday looking at Saturday/Sunday.

Either way and regardless of the precip type, a system is coming and it represents a push of bitter cold air.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

Whether there is snow on the ground, ice on everything, or deep puddles (which will freeze), low to mid 20’s as highs (maybe even colder) will ram itself in for your Martin Luther King day. This arctic blast will look to stick around for 3-4 days, and we could see some single digits as lows during this process.

Depending on system path following the blast, we could see a 1-2 day moderation before another arctic blast, sending January off on a very cold note.

So stay tuned as we watch Thursday night very closely for a possible rough commute Friday morning; and we’ll continue to see how everything evolves for the weekend.
