NYC Clouds Socked In Entire Week

NYC Clouds Socked In Entire Week

Good morning everyone. Clouds and fog have arrived along the East Coast, Northeast and the NYC area, and they’ll be sticking around for a while as moisture heads up the east coast and low pressure gets hung-up to our our west. This is something we’ve been discussing since the exit of our powerful system last week, but at least we won’t be dealing with extreme conditions for the most part.

Rain will move up the coast overnight tonight, giving a rainy time to the Northeast, especially closer to the coast. Rain will stick around tomorrow, then we’ll have scattered showers Thursday and Friday under more clouds. While we’re not expected any strong winds or copious amounts of rain, my one concern will be rivers and streams that just started to settle down a couple of days ago. As stated in previous forecasts, 1-2″ of rain could be enough for some flooding issues to return in areas that would normally absorb small amounts of rain easily. For those in NE PA, NW NJ, and the lower Hudson Valley of NY, please be aware that we may see some flooding issues.

With our primary low getting stuck to our west and meandering to the east, that’ll be enough to keep clouds and scattered showers in the area Thursday and Friday. Something we also previously discussed, it brings a colder component to the forecast, especially as the system finally exits. This could bring a parting shot of wet snow to interior parts of the Northeast and maybe even a few flakes mixed in for New York City and Long Island overnight Friday into early Saturday morning.

We’ll also keep an eye closely on arctic air locked in Canada and any type of mechanism that can open up the flood gates for cold air. As of this moment I don’t see anything extreme going on temp-wise in the immediate forecast, but we are still expecting below average temps before the first week of January ends.

For today, we have our AM fog, then increasing clouds. Highs in the low 50’s. Light rain heads in overnight, then it should increase in steadiness and intensity tomorrow. We could see rain, heavy at times, but it’ll mostly be light to moderate rain. Highs tomorrow in the 50-55 range.

WEATHER RADAR

Clouds remain on Thursday with more 50-55 degree temps, and we could also see some scattered showers about. More showers are expected on Friday as that weakened-primary low pressure nears and tries to gain a little energy off the coast. Temps will dip into the mid 30’s overnight, which could be enough to mix in some wet snow as things depart. No accumulation is expected in NYC or Long Island, but we could see some for interior parts of New England.

Any showers or wet flakes come to an end early Saturday, then it’ll be seasonably chilly in the low 40’s. For New Year’s Eve Day, look for more low to mid 40’s, and a cold one overnight in the upper 20’s to low 30’s for those revelers outside in NYC.
