NYC Cold Overnight Mild Sunday Monday

NYC Cold Overnight Mild Sunday Monday

04/24/24 11:08am ET

Good morning everyone. We continue to watch the gears of spring slowly turning and evolving into a more mid-spring-like pattern, but we have to get by a few speed bumps first. For the Northeast, our first speed bump will be a reinforcing shot of unseasonably cold to chilly air. After that, we’ll have a little mid-spring tease, then another chance for some gloom and chilly air in the long range.

Another function of spring we’re watching, is the returning prospect of severe weather for the Midwest. We had a little taste of some peace, but things are about to change overnight tonight and for the next few days. A new system will be emerging from the Rockies, and will begin to tap the available Gulf moisture as nighttime arrives.

Things start off rather innocuous, with light rain and drizzle in Oklahoma and Kansas; then things will begin to erupt into clusters of severe thunderstorms. Just like last week, this is a slow moving process that will start around midnight tonight, then stronger storms begin to fire up between 2-4am in parts of Oklahoma and Kansas. We could also see a small section of Nebraska get in on the action, with individual cells popping up in the western part of the state.

By morning time, we’ll be watching severe weather in full swing across western Kansas, northeast Oklahoma, northwest Arkansas, and heading into western Missouri. Storms will be capable of large hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and tornadoes. We’ll watch that cluster die out by late tomorrow as it moves east, then a new and larger area of severe weather will blossom.

By the overnight hours tomorrow, we will shift our attention back west into Nebraska, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Kansas, and possibly even into Texas, as that low pressure begins to finally move. Expect clusters and small lines of severe weather to stretch from North Dakota, all the way down to north-central Texas. This new batch of storms will also be capable of large hail and tornadoes.

Here is your local NYC metro forecast –

SATELLITE

We have a bit of sunshine today before more scattered showers head through. This is the reinforcing shot of cold air. Once this happens, 60’s will drop fast and into the 30’s by the overnight hours. Some areas north and west of NYC could see temps in the upper 20’s to low 30’s.

WEATHER RADAR

Sunshine returns tomorrow, but we remain unseasonably cool. Look for dry conditions and highs in the mid to upper 50’s. We modify a bit on Friday, with near 60 temps and lighter winds.

Saturday remains cool with highs near 60 again, but mild air quickly moves in on Sunday. Expect a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the low to mid 70’s. By Monday, we could see near 80 temps, but I don’t think it lasts as cool air is on the move again.
