NYC COOL GLOOM ENTERS STAGE RIGHT
Good gloomy morning everyone. After a brief and late sunny return yesterday, the gloom has drifted back into the area; bringing with it, cooler than average temps and the prospect of a drizzly, Seattle day.
EASTERN SATELLITE
There’s not much I can say about today. We’re starting off May on the wrong foot, but it’s typical for NYC this time of year to stumble out of the gate. We can’t do much until this system clears the area, and it’s slowly drifting east from all the way back in the Chicago-area and upper Mississippi Valley. Until it’s gone, it’ll continue to stretch a stationary front over the Northeast; where we will see varying amounts of gloom depending on what side of the front we are on any given day.
Today, we’re on the “wrong side”, so expect a cloudy and raw day. Nothing crazy as far as precipitation or wind, but it’ll be miserable. Expect light rain or drizzle possible at any time throughout the day, highs in the low 50’s.
REGIONAL RADAR
Tomorrow, mild air will be knocking on our door, but it remains to be seen if it can sneak in to pay a visit for a few hours. This all hangs on any light rain and drizzle leaving in the morning and if that front can make it half-way into Long Island. If it does, we have a chance here in the NYC/Nassau County area to see a taste of May, but we won’t know how this will unfold until tomorrow.
As of now, we will call it as cloudy in the morning with patchy light rain and drizzle; then maybe a peek or two of sun in the afternoon. Highs 65-70, maybe higher if the front edges further east and we can change that wind profile/sunshine factor for a bit. Just to our west/southwest, 75-80 is not out of the realm of possibilities.
Whatever mild air may make it in tomorrow, will get pushed back again on Friday as that front sinks away from us and the gloom returns. This time, precipitation may start to become more concentrated and heavier in nature at times as the main part of the system begins to drift to the East Coast.
Action will remain scattered, but we could have longer periods of showers and maybe even a few rumbles of thunder, especially Friday night. Highs Friday in the low 60’s.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
For your weekend, Saturday looks like the best chance of rain, but the good news is that the air is finally moving and the atmosphere will start kicking this mess out. We’ll also be on the right side of the front, so even though showers and storms will be around, we’ll see 65-70 again.
We’ll be watching on Sunday to see if that system gives us one more poke in the eye and slow to leave the coast; giving us a cloudy, cool, and a chance of morning rain at least. I think we’ll get a better idea on Friday how this whole thing is finally going to play out.
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
Now for some good news. After everything leaves, I believe we start off next week on a sunny note and that idea continues to hold. Sunny and dry, 65-70, is possible for at least 2 days in row, maybe even more as we await and see what our next system does.
Part of the problem is, our pattern is starting to slow down to a summer-like speed. Systems move faster in the winter than in the summer, so we have this rough pattern, AND it’s moving slow. When we get into gloom, it’s slow to leave. Eventually though, when our systems take a friendlier route, we’ll get into some nice stuff and that’ll be slow to leave too. We just have to be patient.
