NYC Fleeting Arctic Blast Ahead

NYC Fleeting Arctic Blast Ahead

Good morning everyone. After a mild day today, we return to more seasonably cool/cold conditions before an arctic blast makes its presence known for approx. 72hrs if you count late Thursday night into early Sunday morning. This coincides with the long range outlook from 2 weeks ago, but as we said, snow wasn’t a guarantee, nor was it in our sights. Moderate to Major snows remain elusive in the medium-range outlook, continuing our “snow drought” for the NYC/NJ/LI area.

A stationary front will set up south of our area sparing us any moderate to heavy precipitation, but will keep us in a mix of sun and clouds throughout the week aside from Friday with that arctic blast. We’ll be on the mild side of the front today first, then we won’t recover much throughout the week. Expect highs in the upper 40’s to low 50’s today; then increasing clouds with maybe some sprinkles overnight and lows in the mid 30’s.

We’re on the other side of the front tomorrow, with a stiff NW flow and highs in the upper 30’s to near 40.

WEATHER RADAR

Wednesday looks seasonably cold with temps slightly below average, but typical NY cold when we have a “normal” winter. Expect more clouds and sun with highs in the mid 30’s. Temps get a light bump on Thursday ahead of the blast, with highs in the upper 30’s to near 40 and more clouds & sun.

Lows in the low to mid 20’s overnight Thursday doesn’t give much of a springboard to recover for Friday, and we won’t with highs briefly in the near 30 range. Look for temps dropping before sunset with blustery conditions. Lows overnight will be in the 0-5 degree range, with some possible negative numbers N&W of the City if the wind relaxes a bit.

Saturday is a sunny and very cold day, with temps in the 20-25 range, then we have 1 more very cold night (but not as cold as Friday night), before things modify. Look for lows in the 15-20 range, then we’re back into the upper 30’s to low 40’s for Sunday already.

As of now we see now major systems for the NYC area as far as snow. Can it happen? Yes, but as far as systems are concerned, we don’t go too far ahead in terms of predicting a snow storm 2 weeks and 6 systems down the road.
