NYC Friday Evening Tropical Update

Good evening everyone. Tropical Storm Warnings, Hurricane Warnings, and Storm Surge Warnings have been posted in parts of the area; including Nassau County, Suffolk County, and Coastal Connecticut. We’re watching the progress of Tropical Storm Henri, which is nearing hurricane strength. The NYC area is not out of the woods either, with storm surge issues, plus a high probability of Tropical Storm Force winds.

Henri is looking healthy as it begins its push northward. The time frame is dialing in, and our area should have rapidly deteriorating conditions by early Sunday AM. High tides occurring between 8:30-9:30am will be a problem, with storm surges 1-3ft in the NYC area, 2-4ft in Nassau, and 2-4/3-5 in Suffolk depending on the final track. We also may have to adjust these numbers westward if Henri wobbles west. Long Island Sound will not escape this one regardless of the track, and may see 2-4ft surge all the way to Whitestone Bridge. A second high tide between 9-10pm will also be an issue, but I think the morning cycle will have the most impact. If you escape any flooding in the AM, most likely you’re good to go in the NYC metro area.

WEATHER RADAR

Henri is a compact system, and not everyone will feel hurricane force winds. The best chance to see hurricane force winds will be the small center and ENE of the center. As it makes landfall, tropical storm force winds will expand outward, and NYC will most likely get in on the action, even if landfall is by Montauk.

While the difference in the models is very small at this point, a small amount will make a big difference, especially for areas such as Nassau and NYC. Any shift west will increase the surge and the winds. Flash flooding is likely everywhere, but may be very damaging inland as the lift from the elevation intensifies the precip as it flows down to low-lying areas.

Be guided by your local administrators and offices of emergency management. They have first handheld knowledge of your elevation and what to expect as far as surge. Please take this storm seriously and start prepping now; even if there’s a chance your specific area may “luck” out.
