NYC HEAVY RAIN WIND FLOODING THREAT
NYC HEAVY RAIN WIND FLOODING THREAT
NYC HEAVY RAIN WIND FLOODING THREAT – Good morning everyone! We’ll get right into the meat and potatoes of today since we’ve been talking long range all week. The same low pressure and frontal system which brought severe weather across the Ohio, Mississippi, and Tennessee valley, is beginning to transit our area. What this means for us is that there will be pockets and periods of rain, heavy at times, with some embedded thunderstorms. Severe weather is not likely at this time, but a few of these thunderstorms could contain some gusty winds. In areas that do see the heavier rain, street flooding is a distinct possibility in poor drainage areas and areas that are overstaurated. With a strong easterly fetch for much of the day and a full moon added to the mix, minor coastal flooding is also possible in the usual spots that see flooding during a minor event (Broad Channel, Gerritsen Beach, etc). Highs today will be in the mid 50’s.
Showers and storms continue tonight as the wind whips around to the southwest and remains gusty. Things will slowly taper off through Friday, as the threat of scattered showers continues, but slowly diminishes; highs in the low to mid 50’s.
We finally clear things out on Saturday for a sunny, windy, and cool day, highs again in the mid 50’s. Spring weather finally arrives in Sunday and you can check out my spring long range discussion here.
Satellite View
A broad system enters the area. Bright white clouds along the mid Atlantic and southeast coast are indicative of the colder tops of powerful thunderstorms, but in our area, heavy rain and a few rumbles of thunder are more likely than severe weather.
Northeast Radar
Pockets of heavy rain and thunder are scattered about the northeast corridor. In the NYC area, this will go on all day as waves of heavy rain will come and go, causing flooding in the typical areas during times of the heaviest rain.
