NYC Heavy Wet Snow Expected Tomorrow

Good morning everyone. If you haven’t heard, it’s going to snow again in the Northeast. This is the finale in a series of moderate to strong systems that have raked past the area in the last several weeks, and the pattern will begin to break down slowly. Before we celebrate though, we have to get through this one, which has the potential to bring a mess.

For today, it’ll be relatively nice but cold. That cold air digging in will help set us up for tomorrow’s moisture, and makes sure any snow sticks on the ground from the onset. Expect sunny skies and highs in the low 30’s today, low to mid 20’s overnight.

Clouds begin to increase overnight, then lower and thicken tomorrow morning. Snow is expected to begin by late morning/early afternoon, and it’ll be light tiny flakes to start. Don’t be fooled though, because this is Gulf moisture heading into the area; and once precip intensifies, it’ll be big flakes of the heavy wet snow variety (especially as that snow/sleet line gets near).

We’re not going to do any snow maps today because the system is going to bring a general 4-8″+ throughout the area. This is similar to the last system which brought 4-8″+ in the sense that it’s on the move and can only drop so much. There are a few caveats though, which is the reasoning for the “8”+”.

Just like every other system, we have to wait and see where the heaviest snow sets up and see if any banding takes places. As of now, the best chance to see 8″+ will be N&W of the NYC area. However, if the changeover to a wintry mix is delayed later tomorrow evening/overnight, 8″+ is entirely possible in the NYC/LI area. For a long shot, hail-Mary, if no changeover occurs at all, then we’ll need to adjust those numbers even higher.

For the time being though, we are going to keep that 4-8″+ forecast and I’m very comfortable with that. Mostly likely it’ll fall within the mid to upper end of that spectrum, with maybe the lower end of the spectrum by the Forks. Again, any delay in the changeover will bring everything towards to upper end of the spectrum and beyond; hence the “+”.

On Friday, we’re slow to clear out, with lingering wintry mix till late morning/possibly early afternoon. Make sure you clean well, because cold temps at night will cause everything to freeze.

We will be in a more quiet pattern, but not necessarily a warmer one right now. Next chance for precip is Monday, but it’s looking very light.
