NYC Moderate Snow Accumulations Today Through Tomorrow

Good morning everyone. Snow has begun a little early across the area, and that may help get the first part out of here a couple of hours earlier as well. This might give us some breathing room in the evening to clean up before the next round of light snow moves in. After this, the pattern begins to slowly and relatively break down. Aside from a weak system on Monday, we are quiet for 7 days or so before our next chance of precip. It won’t be perfect and it certainly won’t be mild, but at least it’s a break from the systems every 2-3 days.

Tiny flakes are falling across the area, and most places have a dusting to a coating already. Light snow will continue to fall, moderate to heavy at times, and those flakes will get bigger as the day goes on. Obviously, sticking is not an issue, and temps should hover in the upper 20’s. Sleet should begin to mix in by mid to late afternoon, especially along the south shore of Long Island, the Forks and parts of NYC.

I’m happy with the 4-8+” originally predicted several days ago, and we’re going to stick with that number. The only difference in the numbers, is that it’s not as clean cut, and will happen over a longer duration.

The meat and potatoes is today with 3-6″ falling throughout most of the area. However, instead of getting this thing out of here, a second wave of moisture will move over the area before departing some time tomorrow afternoon/evening. This will generally be light in nature, and could deposit another 1-3″ of snow. Highs tomorrow in the low to mid 30’s.

For those wondering why NWS didn’t put us in a Winter Storm Warning even though the amounts haven’t changed, this is why. The duration of the event exceeds the parameters in terms of how much snow needs to fall within 24hrs to be declared a warning. That being said, this is a really grey area with some overlap, so don’t be surprised if they make it warning later on. It’s all semantics anyway, and we are getting our snow regardless. It doesn’t matter what they call it.

Saturday and Sunday look like carbon copy days, with sunny skies and low to mid 30’s. Our next chance of precip is with a weak system Monday, and we might see some light snow changing to rain. Highs will be at or exceed 40, so this is not going to be an issue.
