NYC Plowable Snow Possible Thursday Into Overnight Hours
Good morning everyone. We have a mild and foggy end to our system today as it departs very quickly. That fog is due to the mild air interacting with the cold air at the surface due to our snow cover, but things are on the move and our eyes shift towards Thursday. Things continue to evolve in a direction that’s not favorable towards a mild and rainy outcome, and it seems as if Mother Nature has a final kick in the ribs before the pattern subsides & things calm down.
SATELLITE
Expect a cloudy and mild morning, with some spots nearing 50. A few showers will linger over the next couple of hours, then we turn breezy and begin to cool down. We’ll see some partial clearing ensuing, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we have a decent sunset.
F5 WEATHER RADARS
Tomorrow expect full sunshine, stiff northwesterlies, and highs in the low to mid 30’s. Overnight, we’ll dip into the low to mid 20’s, and that colder air moving in is going to set us up for Thursday.
Thursday’s system continues to evolve from what looked like low pressure racing off into the Great Lakes last week. That would’ve given us another shot at some mild and rainy weather here in the NYC area, but things aren’t working out in such a way. Today’s departing system dug deep enough south when it was near the Gulf, that it helped change the course of our next system.
We’ve been watching this and warned about a colder solution, with a possible “thump” of snow before any mixing or changeover occurred. Now we are watching to see if this “thump” now becomes a more prolonged period of snow before any mixing occurs, if any mixing at all.
This would equate to a reconfiguration of snow totals, from a 2-4″ type snowfall before any changeover, to a 4-8″+ type snowfall before any changeover. Then you have a situation where what if the changeover is only brief, and that would mean an even heavier type outcome in terms of accumulation.
We are watching it all, and I think at this point I’m going to put myself in the middle with a 4-8″+ type snowfall possible before any mixing occurs. Some adjustments in the number may have to happen depending on the final track of this system. It’s also coming from our southwest with Gulf-sourced moisture, so that means we’re in for a heavy wet snow here in the NYC/LI area. Right now, the timing looks like Thursday afternoon into early Friday morning regardless of how the precip turns out.
Stay tuned as we fine tune everything.
