NYC High Wind Warnings Remain Posted

Good morning everyone. The system that brought rounds of severe weather to the MidWest, Gulf, and Southeast, is here and bringing rain and wind along with it. While high wind warnings remain posted, there are some caveats as to who will see the strongest winds, how, and what will everyone else experience.

SATELLITE

First and foremost, we have several batches of rain coming in and out of the NYC area. The first batch has begun to move out, and a heavier area of rain will be heading in over the course of the next couple of hours. This should allow for some of that wind energy to make it to the surface, bringing 20-30mph sustained winds and maybe some gusts to 40-50mph at times with this batch.

Our winds should increase even more during the afternoon and into early evening with the final approach of our cold front. Everything wind-wise hangs on what type of heavy shower and/or thunderstorm activity develops as our system passes through. If there is a lack of activity, we should hold onto those 20-30mph winds with 40-50mph gusts. However, if we get a few intense lines of heavy showers/rumbles, it could be enough to get more energy down to the surface. That would give the general area 25-40mph sustained winds, and gusts near 60 possible.

Immediate, south-facing shores of NYC, Long Island, coastal NJ, the Forks of LI, Block Island, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard will see the strongest wind potential out of this. The same story goes as far as our wind feature depending on shower/storm activity, but with less friction and open space for that southerly fetch, winds could go 30-40mph sustained, with gusts between 60-70mph during the most intense activity. In the end, I think the highest wind reports will obviously be the weather buoys along our coastline, then Block Island, Nantucket, Montauk, Pt. Lookout, Fire Island, and maybe the JFK tower.

For those in the interior Northeast, it’ll be a windy/gusty day, but you won’t see the same action as the immediate shore unless it’s due to severe thunderstorm activity. Highs today will be a muggy and cloudy 65-70 in between raindrops.

REGIONAL RADAR

We calm down in a big way tomorrow, but keep a breeze going as we dry things out. Expect mid 50’s and steady 10-20mph winds with a few gusts.

Clouds return tomorrow night with a weak system heading through. The “big story” with this will be a cool day Wednesday, clouds and sun, the slight chance of a few showers, and we might not make it to 50. I put 50 on the 5 day, but it could be a stretch.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Sun and Clouds return for Thursday and Friday with a slight recovery temp-wise. We’ll remain dry and highs will be in the low to mid 50’s both days.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

The weekend is looking dry and very seasonable, with highs 55-60 Saturday and sunny skies; then sunny skies continue for Sunday with maybe some low 60’s.
