NYC Hot Humid Weather Returns September Relief Ahead

Good morning everyone and welcome back to muggy August. Low pressure begins to slowly exit the area, but not before touching off a few more heavy showers and storms. Parts of eastern Long Island are already having that experience, with locally flooding rains and gusty rumbles. Those will pull away, but with low pressure still creating instability, we should see the sun work the atmosphere to create more heavy storms later on. The long range continues to hint at some much cooler weather to start September +/- 2 days, but our weekend coming up doesn’t look as comfortable as I wanted it.

As stated before, heavy showers and storms are out there in eastern Suffolk by the Riverhead area and the North Fork. Those will eventually dissipate, but not before creating local flooding conditions. This is the type of rain we don’t want due to the dry soil, so use some diligence when driving through conditions now and later on today.

It’ll be a muggy one with highs in the mid 80’s, possible a few upper 80’s if the sun breaks out; then that chance of more storms with the heating of the day. Those storms could contain damaging winds, hail, and the possibility of an isolated tornado.

We calm down tomorrow, but the heat is on with light westerlies. It’ll be slightly less humid, but expect temps in the upper 80’s to near 90 under full sunshine.

WEATHER RADAR

The heat continues on for Thursday as a SW component kicks in. This will bring back muggy conditions with near 90/low 90 temps. Friday holds solid, with AM sun, then sun & clouds with the chance of some scattered storms and highs near 90. This is compliments of a cold front that’ll move through, but at this point it only looks like a humidity-cutter with only slightly cooler temps.

Look for slightly less humid conditions on Saturday, with sunshine and upper 80’s for highs. We’ll have pretty much the same for Sunday, but the humidity begins to creep up again.

To start the next work week, upper 80’s to near 90 temps remain on the menu, but we continue to see hints of a strong cold front moving through some time between next Wednesday and Saturday. We’ll see if this trend continues, but if it comes to fruition, it could knock us back into the 70’s for a few days with low humidity and a refreshing breeze. We’ll also watch for the potential for widespread severe weather if this cold front is able to hold a sharp contrast in air masses.

The tropics remain quiet aside from some action in the Gulf. However, this poses no threat to us and will be heading into south Texas/Mexico. The biggest threat will be flooding rains for the general region down there. Because it’s quiet and because it’s the time of year where fronts get hung up in the Southeast, I’m in “front-watching” mode for quick tropical development along any hypothetical front. As of now, there is nothing going on.
