NYC ICE STORM POSSIBLE FOLLOWING PLOWABLE SNOW
Good morning everyone. Light snow is beginning to depart the scene and we got about in inch in most places of the New York City area; and of course, the big story is our next system due for arrival tomorrow with a good thump of snow before things get very dangerous.
EASTERN SATELLITE
Light snow is beginning to depart the area and aside from a few spotty flakes, we shouldn’t add much to what has fallen already. Partial clearing will ensue as the day goes on and temps in the upper 30’s to low 40’s will help melt most of what’s fallen aside from what’s in the shadows.
We clear out tonight with seasonably cold temps and be careful for patches of black ice with lows dipping into themed to upper 20’s.
REGIONAL RADAR
Clouds increase quickly tomorrow and we should have snow entering the picture between 3-6pm. The earlier it starts, the harder a time it’ll have sticking initially with temps about freezing. However, anything after sunset and/or if the intensity picks up, it’ll have no problem sticking and we start piling up from there.
The most intense snow looks to be between 10pm and 1am, and then we start watching the radar and cold air closely for the changeover to a wintry mix. I’m still sticking to my initial forecast of a 2-4/3-6″ hit before any changeover, with the 3-6″ mark happening if we start sticking a little early and/or if we changeover a little late.
This is where things get dicey. Cold surface temps will be stubborn as warm air invades the mid-layers of the atmosphere with that juicy, warm low and it’s Gulf moisture. Expect oscillations late overnight tomorrow between sleet, rain, and freezing rain, falling on top of our fresh layer of snow. Aside from a layer of ice on top of the snow, we could have ice accumulations on tree limbs and power lines, causing issues with power outages.
As cold air pushes back into all layers of the atmosphere Sunday with our departing storm, expect that wintry mix to change back to sleet and snow, before ending sometime mid to late afternoon. Temps on Sunday will drop through the 20’s as the day goes on, then settle into the upper single digits as lows overnight; turning everything into a hard, white, slippery cement.
Minor to moderate coastal flooding will also be an issue in the notorious spots come our high tide cycle Sunday morning.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
We will continue to watch this very closely as dealing with these changeovers and thin bands of frozen precip can be very tricky. A 5-10 mile shift north or south can change the forecast for parts of our area; and frankly that’s impossible to predict until we watch things unfold as far as the radar/cold air.
For those alive or remember the winter of 92/93, if things unfold the way it’s expected, this may remind you of some of those storms we had in terms of ice over a layer of snow. It’s very hard to clean up.
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

Martin Luther King day continues to look very cold, with highs in the teens, then we slowly modify for Tuesday but remain below normal. Our first chance to truly chip out and do some melting will be on Wednesday as an approaching system helps us into the 40’s.
Another cold bitter cold blast is due back into the area for next weekend.
Stay tuned for everything.
