NYC JANUARY 2019 LONG RANGE OUTLOOK

Good morning everyone. Last night’s system didn’t amount to very much as expected, with spotty very light snow, mix, and rain, reported in various locations before quickly falling apart. Plus, aside from the immediate forecast, I go into the long range today.

EASTERN SATELLITE

storm free

Clouds will stick around today for much of the morning, then clearing will take place slowly. We should see some sun before day’s end with highs in themed to upper 40’s and a light but steady WNW wind.  We’ll have a sunny start tomorrow, then clouds will roll back in eventually with the approach of our next system, highs in the mid to upper 40’s again.

REGIONAL RADAR

Clouds lower and thicken overnight and winds shift to the vaunted northeast direction. This is associated with low pressure that’ll slip just to our south and brings us a shot of rain. There will be no 50’s and 60’s with this one, so expect a raw and damp day for Saturday when you wake up. Nasty conditions stay with us for at least through early afternoon and it’ll be a cold rain, highs in the low 40’s.

Things clear out Saturday night to pave the way for a gorgeous Sunday. Cool air will lag behind this system, so expect us to squeeze out a sunny and breezy day with highs in the mid to upper 40’s.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Cooler air works in for Monday, timed perfectly for our next system Monday night. Highs Monday should be in the 35-40 range as moisture comes in to create some headaches overnight. So far, we’re looking at the chance of some wet snow, or a rain and snow mix with some overrunning moisture. The path of this system is not snow-friendly, so expect any frozen precip to turn to all rain quickly by sunrise Tuesday.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

In the long range, cooler air works its way back in for mid-week next week. We’re looking to be in the normal realm with highs in the mid 30’s to near 40 degrees.

Very cold air tries to sneak in for around the middle of the month +/-2 days but I see a problem in terms of how long it lasts. We’ve seen this before, where bitter cold air slides into the Northeast, but it’s entering from the Great Lakes region and not chugging west from deep in the Midwest. This type of pattern will typically gives us 1-3 days of below average temps before modifying quickly, then we rinse and repeat often.

It also remains hostile towards snow aside from any light snow from reinforcing shots of cold air. However, it could also be one of the recipes for a bigger snow event much further down the road if the split jet combines for a one-time/one-off deal.
