NYC Local Forecast Plus Tropical Update

NYC Local Forecast Plus Tropical Update

Good morning everyone. We continue to have a lot going on in terms of the tropics, while things are very quiet locally aside from some high surf from Hurricane Franklin. That high surf will begin to roll in between tonight and tomorrow, and things will get progressively more rough ocean-wise Wednesday and Thursday. Expect rough conditions in the inlets, and things should stay that way until things begin to settle down after the weekend.

Meanwhile, we are keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Idalia, which will most likely make landfall somewhere in Florida as a category 3 or 4 Hurricane. Right now, the biggest risk will be somewhere along the central west coast of Florida, northward towards the Apalachee Bay coast. In the center of that window, is the Cedar Key area, which would prove to be devastating if it were to sustain a direct hit. Cedar Key is lightly populated, but known for its small-town feel, fishing pier, restaurants, and a tourist destination.

After (Hurricane) Idalia is done with wherever it hits, it will move across the peninsula either into interior Georgia and move just inland of the coast, or emerge off of the southeast coast of Georgia and skirt coastal areas of GA and SC. If this does happen (the coastal route), it could maintain Category 1 hurricane or strong Tropical Storm-status, and/or restrengthen into a Category 1 Hurricane if it weakens into a T.S.

We have a while to go on that in terms of what it’ll do after, but coastal areas of west Florida need to begin to prepare now.

SATELLITE

Locally, we have mostly cloudy skies as a front draped across the general area protects against Hurricane Franklin. We’ll see seasonably mild temps today, with highs in the upper 70’s.

Cloudy skies remain tomorrow with the chance of some on and off showers. Highs again in the upper 70’s.

WEATHER RADAR

Showers should begin to depart on Wednesday, but clouds stick around for most of the day. Highs in the upper 70’s.

Sunshine returns for Thursday with mid to upper 70’s, then we’ll do sunshine and 75-80 for Friday. Overall the NYC area remains quiet, and Idalia will be no threat to the area; not even rain.
