NYC Major Storm Underway Wide Array Weather Conditions Expected
Good late afternoon everyone. We have the first piece of our two-part system underway, and this one is no slouch regarding heavy rain and gusty winds. However, it will not compare to the second part once all of the ingredients combine, giving us moderate to major coastal flooding, damaging winds, and the possibility of a flash freeze/parting burst of heavy snow.
SATELLITE
Rain intensity is increasing and becoming more steady, as winds become more stiff and more intense. Those winds will peak tonight and into tomorrow, with some areas seeing gusts in the 55+ range. Temps will rise overnight into the 50’s, so this first part will be an all rain event.
However, as this system’s energy combines with a monster low and trailing arctic front, we will increase the intensity of the rain again tomorrow after a brief tapering off/lull; then the arctic air may beat the moisture to our area, giving us a fairly intense snow squall or burst of heavy snow. All we can do is watch the radar and cold air at this point, but regardless, a flash freeze is possible as anything wet will turn to black ice and thicker patches of ice where ponding of the roads occurred. By evening, temps will have dropped into the upper teens to low 20’s. If we do get a burst of snow, areas could see a quick coating to 2″ depending on the intensity. With the flash freeze, this hypothetical layer of snow on top of moist surfaces, could make things even more dangerous.
Coastal flooding will be a big concern overnight and into tomorrow along low lying/flood prone areas. Areas such as Gerritsen in Brooklyn *Howard Beach, Broad Channel, and Head of Bay in Queens *Freeport, Baldwin, S. Merrick, S. Belmore, Wantagh, Seaford, Lindenhurst, Babylon, and so on, need to take action to protect property. In flood prone areas, no cars should be left on the streets or driveways that flood. The best rule of thumb is, if you get flooding during any given Nor’Easter, then you will probably get flooding with this.
WEATHER RADAR
Things calm down Saturday, but the blustery winds remain. After lows in the low to mid teens, we will only recover into the upper teens to low 20’s. Winds will relax a bit on Christmas Day, with highs in the mid to upper 20’s. We’ll have teens overnight again on Sunday, then we bounce back to near 30 temps for Monday.
