NYC Morning Clouds Give Way to Very Mild Day

04/28/24 10:25am ET

Good morning everyone. Things are very quiet in the Northeast compared to the violent night the Midwest had to deal with yesterday, with a nasty tornado outbreak and damaging storms. Tonight will be no different as storms re-fire with our system finally marching to the east.

In the Northeast, stubborn clouds make for a cloudy and cool morning in many spots, but eventually things will break up and air will quickly warm up into the very mild category. We have a very warm day tomorrow with light NNW winds giving us the opportunity for some dry, sinking are that always warms up nice and quickly. Dry conditions remain in the area until late Tuesday as cooler air heads in. Regardless, seasonably mild air resumes late week with some fairly calm weather.

The Midwest is where the action is at, and we remain concerned with another round of convection and shear building up this evening. Between the hours of 6 and 8pm CT, we’ll be watching a broad line of severe weather beginning to develop in northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, northwest Arkansas, and central Missouri. Once it reaches maturity, that line should stretch from Illinois all the way down to Texas as it slowly marches east.

Unfortunately, we will see another round of tornadic storms, with a high risk of numerous strong tornadoes, large hail, damaging straight-line winds, frequent lightning, and torrential rain. The time frame with this risk will be this evening and overnight for the area mentioned, then early in the morning in Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas as that northern component of the line collapses and the southern component gets a second wind.

It’s quite possible that with this line, we could see severe thunderstorms reach the Gulf Coast and Houston area by mid to late morning tomorrow and New Orleans by mid to late afternoon. This is a fluid situation that will be hard to predict exactly where tornadic activity will occur, so please listen to your local agencies for the latest watches and warnings. Be prepared to take action in order to save property and life.

Expect full sunshine tomorrow with light NNW winds that’ll help boost us into the mid 80’s. Some areas could see some upper 80’s if the wind profile cooperates.

Tuesday will be a shock temp-wise with morning sunshine and increasing clouds late. The warm weather is gone with mid to upper 60’s depending on when those clouds arrive. Look for a late shower or rumble later in the evening or overnight.
