NYC Nasty Weekend Weather Ahead

NYC Nasty Weekend Weather Ahead

Good morning everyone. We have ourselves a nasty little winter storm developing, and this one (along with this pattern) is reminding us very much of what most of the 1980’s were like for both the Northeast and the West Coast. During the 80’s, we had large repetitive storms slamming the west coast all fall and winter (which is why they had no severe drought back then), and Nor’easters dumping snow just N&W of the New York City area (which is why ski resorts thrived in the Poconos in the 80’s).

So we’ll have ourselves a retro weekend as “warmer” solutions hold onto the notion of heavy snow west of the I95 corridor, north and west of NYC, and parts of New England. That 6-12″ swath of snow is holding on tight in areas such as NE PA, NW NJ, the Lower Hudson Valley of New York, and Lower New England. We may also see some locally higher amounts in higher elevations and if some banding occurs.

The entire thing is gone by Monday morning, but then we begin to watch for an even bigger system for Tuesday. This one will take a different track, bringing Blizzard conditions to parts of the Midwest and severe thunderstorms along the Gulf and Southeast states. Some areas in the Northeast may see some heavy onset snows, but this is a rainmaker for the coastal plain.

Here is your local forecast –

Expect sunshine and cold conditions today. The winds will be lighter than previously expected, so the chill won’t be as bad. Look for high in the mid to upper 30’s. We have another cold one overnight with lows in the 20’s.

WEATHER RADAR

Clouds increase tomorrow, and we’ll have light rain or mix starting some time between 12pm and 4pm. Depending on the arrival time, you might see a few light flakes or graupel pellets before the rain and mix occurs. Highs tomorrow in the upper 30’s. Rain and mix gets heavier overnight and stronger winds will develop. We could see wind gusts of 40-55 mph along the immediate shore, and some minor to moderate coastal flooding is possible during the high tide cycles Saturday night into Sunday.

Rain and/or mix could end as all snow on Sunday before things depart, which is why we can’t fully rule out accumulating snow in NYC and Long Island (especially the north shore). We’ll have to watch and see how strong our system gets, how long it takes to depart, and if it’s able to pull down some colder air as it leaves. Highs Sunday in the upper 30’s before dropping later int he day.

Again, we could see some icing overnight on wet or slushy roads as we dip below freezing, so be careful especially on the early morning commute Monday.
