NYC Nor’Easter Brings Heavy Snows Inland
Good afternoon everyone. As expected, our Nor’Easter (Meh’Easter) scheduled for tomorrow into Friday is doing pretty much everything a system will do when developing too close to the coast and developing too late. There are a few things that are making this look a little extra spicy wind-wise, but everything else is right on par; with heavy snows expected inland, and 1-2″ windswept rains expected locally.
SATELLITE
In the meantime, we have a sunny, chilly, and dry day today with highs in the upper 30’s to near 40. It’ll be a cold one tonight with lows in the upper 20’s to near 30, but the cold air can’t stay locked in long enough in the NYC Metro Area to make a difference precip-wise.
Our large system out west transfers its energy to the coast, but it’ll hug the coast initially, putting the nail in the coffin for any snow in the NYC area. However, parts of NW NJ and the Lower Hudson Valley could see some onset snow, sleet, and/or mixed precip, before changing to all rain. Here locally in NYC and Long Island, precip will arrive a little late as far as near or below freezing temps, but don’t be surprised if you see a sleet pellet or wet snowflake here or there mush the windshield during the onset of some light rain. Highs tomorrow will be in the low 40’s with easterlies building and becoming steady.
Rain increases in intensity overnight tomorrow as temps remain steady. Any snow or sleet in the Lower Hudson Valley and NW NJ should turn to a plain cold rain, with 1-3″ of accumulation possible before the changeover. Some minor coastal flooding is possible, and winds along the immediate coast will gust in the upper 30 to mid 40mph range. For coastal Suffolk areas, especially the Forks, we could see some 45-50+mph gusts depending on if we can get some faster deepening.
Rain and wind continues for Friday, and we won’t see any tapering off until some time between late afternoon and late evening. Wind gusts remain the same at the coast, but they’ll begin to settle down as Friday night sees our system head towards New England.
For higher elevations, especially the Catskills and areas west of Albany, the potential is there for 6-12″ of snow, with some lollipop hits of 12-18″+ depending on where the heaviest convection sets up. Areas east and northeast of Albany into New England could see the same as cold air remains trapped and the higher elevations help with the lift.
For us, look for 1-2″ of rain overall, and the slight chance of a few departing flakes mixed with rain; but if that occurs, it should be very brief w/ no accumulation expected.
WEATHER RADAR
Your weekend is looking sunny, chilly, and quiet, with low to mid 40’s expected for Saturday; then upper 30’s to low 40’s likely Sunday. Into next week and the long range, it seems as if we get into a seasonably cold void for a little break from the precip, then we will be watching our next system some time around Christmas Weekend.
