NYC Rainy Raw Time While Heavy Snow Expected Well Inland

Good morning everyone and welcome to the impending “Meh’Easter”. I joke, but for some this will be a significant storm; but not for NYC and Long Island though. Things are quiet and chilly as we await the doom, gloom, and rawness that is a coastal/near-coastal low which doesn’t have enough cold air to work with, but just enough to give a very cold rain and chill through your bones. We’ll go over the timeline and what to expect before, during, and after.

The before is what you see now. Sunshine, seasonably chilly (slightly below average but nothing extreme), and dry conditions. Expect our sunshine and near 40 temps to last through tomorrow, although lows overnight tonight will be well below freezing and in the 20’s, so bundle up if you’re out there.

WEATHER RADAR

Clouds increase overnight tomorrow with lows in the mid to upper 20’s, but precip holds off on Thursday long enough for the mid-layers to keep things mostly rain. While it’s not being discussed, don’t be surprised to see a few wet flakes or bits of sleet mixed in during the onset of rain; especially if we get things going a little earlier than expected. Otherwise, this is a primarily (if not all) rain event for NYC and Long Island.

Rain intensity will increase overnight Thursday and into early Friday, as well as stiff ENE winds. We’re not looking at a major system here as far as wind, but it’ll be enough to make things miserable. As far as snow is concerned, it does have enough juice to put down a fairly large swath of 6-10″ snows in the middle to upper Hudson Valley, as well as NEPA, extreme NW NJ, and interior sections of New England. In higher elevations, expect some extra lift to enhance things, with a possible 12-18″ dumping of snow in spots.

All in all and as disappointing it is for snow lovers in the NYC Metro Area, these locales upstate desperately need a system like this. For almost 20 years, the coast has been the focal point of heavier snows, while the mountains and valleys suffered a “snow drought” after a fruitful period in the 80’s and 90’s.

Things will begin to taper off Friday afternoon, with lingering widely scattered showers, clouds, and a stiff breeze. High temps will happen early with mid to upper 40’s, then we begin to go chillier once again. Look for sunshine and low 40’s Saturday, then upper 30’s to near 40 on Sunday for late-December-like conditions.
