NYC Heavy Windswept Rain Expected Tonight Tomorrow
Good morning everyone. Our Nor’Easter remains on schedule, and we are watching the radar and cold air closely to see if there are any changes to be made. So far we are looking good in the NYC area, and I still see the potential for a few wet flakes or ice pellets mixed in with the rain briefly during the onset. With temperatures above freezing, this will just a visual thing and no dangerous threat if it happens at all. Otherwise, this is a majority-rain event for NYC, with heavy snow still expected well inland.
SATELLITE
The rain is knocking on our door, and should start over the next few hours. It’ll be light and nature during the onset, with a few brief west flakes and/or snow pellets mixed in possibly during the onset. Any scattered mixing should become all plain, cold rain rather quickly, and intensifying during the nighttime hours. Highs today will be in the low 40’s, with mid to upper 30’s right now as I type this. Low 40’s will rise into the mid 40’s overnight, so don’t get your hopes up for any snowy surprise. Winds will also increase, and we will have gusts in the 45-50mph range at the immediate coast; 30-40 mph gusts away from the shore.
Windy, rainy, and raw conditions continue tomorrow with mid 40’s sinking back to the upper 30’s to low 40’s by early afternoon. We will be watching the radar and colder temps closely again, as we could see a departing shot of mixed precip for the NYC Metro Area. Again, this poses no threat if it does happen at all, and no accumulation is expected. Minor coastal flooding is possible at high tide, but this shouldn’t impact areas aside from bulkheads and marshes.
Inland is a different story, where a wide swath of 6-12″ of snow is possible in the Catskills and beyond. There will be some areas that see 12″+, but we have to wait and see where the heaviest convection sets up. The Poconos will get in on the action too, but mixing will keep the totals down a bit. In those locations, a 2-4/4-7″ snowfall could occur depending on your elevation.
WEATHER RADAR
The weaken remains quiet and chilly, with sunshine, dry conditions, and highs in the low 40’s Saturday; then near 40 Sunday. Your week also looks to be on the cold side, with generally sunny conditions and 35-40 degree temps.
In the long range, we will be watching 2 potential systems. The first one is timed at or just before your holiday weekend, and the other just after Christmas. As of now it’s too early to go into either, but there is enough cold air available for some snow IF either of these 2 systems have a favorable track and strength.
