NYC Stubborn Nor’Easter Could Alter Next Storm’s Fate

NYC Stubborn Nor’Easter Could Alter Next Storm’s Fate

Good morning everyone. We’ll jump right into what everyone’s asking in terms of our next system striking the area just before Christmas. Some may not like what I have to say in regards to our chances for big snows, or may seem like I’m kicking the can down the road, but I have to call it as I see it with the information we have at this time. In the meantime, we’ll do the local/immediate forecast first, then you can scroll to the bottom where I explain this mess.

First off, our system is very slow to pull away, which is not only causing a ding in the long range outlook, but also gave us some extra coastal flooding than expected. Areas along the south shore of Long Island, especially in the Great South Bay Area, experienced some moderate coastal flooding as opposed to minor. This was able to do some property damage in some spots, especially cars left out in flood-prone areas.

It’s all coming to an end, with costal flooding diminished  and precip essentially concentrated in most of Maine. Cold air is left behind, and we’ll have sunshine from here and up to Wednesday. Steady WNW winds will make things feel even colder, with highs temps in the upper 30’s to near 40. The same goes for tomorrow, but the winds will subside temporarily.

WEATHER RADAR

Winds return on Monday, but sunshine remains and highs in the upper 30’s to near 40 remain as well. We’ll repeat and rinse Tuesday and Wednesday, with lighter winds once again.

For our next system and those hoping for a powerful storm here, you may have your powerful storm, but not the right path. Our Nor’Easter slow to pull away from New England, is holding things up, possibly pushing the fate of our next system further west. Also, the GFS is pushing a double-barrel low pressure system and from what I’ve seen my entire lifetime, these rarely work out as depicted.

Unless I see any changes, we could be looking at a snow/mix to rain and back to snow kind of deal, with mostly a rain event overall. We could see a few variations play out here, one of which being a completely all rain event, or if things go slightly the other way, an even rain/snow event for the NYC area.

We are in the early stages here and it’s way to early to tell. However, for those traveling, we do know a big system will be lurking Thursday/Friday no matter how it plays out, so hit the road earlier than planned, or change your airfare accordingly. Make your changes now instead of waiting, so you can beat the rush to the door.
