NYC NOREASTER POUNDS COASTAL AREAS INLAND SNOW

NYC NOREASTER POUNDS COASTAL AREAS INLAND SNOW – Good rainy and raw morning everyone. As promised for the last week or so, our Nor’easter has arrived and is delivering on it’s promise as well. Everything you’d expect with a March Nor’easter, including interior heavy snows and beach pounding waves, will be the big story of the day until things begin to settle down.

Believe it or not, we actually haven’t seen the worst of the winds yet. Our low pressure system is still continuing its energy transfer from the old primary low back to our west. As it completes this process and begins to pull away from the coast, that is when our winds will start to gust 50-60+mph in areas, especially along the immediate shore with less friction. We should start to see the bigger wind action by the afternoon.

As far as precip is concerned, rain, heavy at times, will continue through late morning. We’re in the upper 30’s right now and should be in the mid 30’s by early afternoon. As the low pull pulls away, it’ll try to pull down some colder air into the atmosphere. This could help give is a mix of rain and snow at times, especially when the radar is busy with stronger bands of convection.

At times you’ll only be able to tell it’s doing this when you see globs of slush hit your windshield while driving, other times some big, wet flakes may fill the air. It’s a very dynamic situation, so expect several transitions from rain to mix to rain to snow to mix to rain, and not all areas will experience the same thing. It could even end as all wet snow briefly, but as I said, this is at the bottom of the list as far as priority, with no accumulation expected.

Wind and rain/mix continue into tonight, as well as the coastal flooding threat with several more high tide cycles to go before the system’s influence begins to subside. Tomorrow, we’ll have partial clearing, a gusty northerly wind, and seasonably cool temps in the mid 40’s. A stiff breeze continues to Sunday, with sunny skies and low to mid 40’s. We remain sunny, with winds finally calming down Monday and Tuesday, and seasonably cool temps again in the mid to upper 40’s.

System number 2 (of possibly 3) arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday courtesy of our blocking pattern, with a cold rain and possibly more snow inland. This one will be a fast mover compared to today, but it may cover a similar track, so we will watch closely as far as if there is any colder air available to make things interesting down here.

Behind our early to mid-week system, we return to normal temperature-wise and await system number 3 in our blocking pattern. Same as with our mid-week low pressure system, we’ll have to watch its path closely and see how much cold air is available. After that, I think we begin to calm down a bit and return to a more quiet, spring-like scenario for Mid-March to last 1/3 of March.
