NYC Quick Moving Snowstorm Possible Sunday
Good morning everyone. A few days ago when the models were kicking our next system out to sea, I refused to write it off because I said it would be a race to finish line between two areas of moisture. Now it looks as if we lose the race, and may be in for another shot of heavy snow. There are big differences though between Sunday and last week, and we’ll go into it below.
SATELLITE
First off, we have a quick moving front coming on through as we speak. Moisture is a little late to arrive to the NYC/Long Island area, so we’re going to keep things a chilly rain here. Rain will be on the light side, and it’ll be gone by late morning/early afternoon. Some mixed precip and snow remains a morning commute issue for areas of NJ west of NYC and into NE PA, but again, it’s all gone soon and we should even see some sunshine. Highs today in the NYC area will be in the low 40’s.
F5 WEATHER RADARS
Tomorrow we go sunny and breezy, then start clouding up towards evening and overnight with our next system. Highs in the mid 30’s.
For Sunday, the tail end of our system today will drape itself across the Gulf Coast, allowing a wave to form along it. At the same time, a clipper-like system is dropping out of Canada and heading towards the Great Lakes region. A few days ago, I said if the area of energy coming out of Canada is a little late, it could draw the Gulf moisture closer to the Northeast. Well, that’s exactly what’s going on.
As of this very moment, it looks as if the heaviest snow may set up along the coast of NYC, Long Island, and extreme SE New England. However, this one is on the move fast. Last week’s system did the damage it did because it just sat there. Now you may get a taste of what a similar system in strength does when it’s on the move.
There is still some fine tuning to do, but a system moving this fast would be capable of a 3-6/4-8/5-10″+ type quick shot. Whoever sees the heaviest snow, will experience a brief heavy burst capable of putting down a quick 4″ of snow, then the subsequent lighter accumulations prior and after that heavy band. It’ll also be of the wet variety, so you better get it up quick before it freezes under the 15-20 degree temps Sunday night.
We’ll do snow maps tomorrow, but think in your head a general 4-8″; sliding the scale back or forward if needed.
Stay tuned.
